While I have always enjoyed reading poetry, I have not often practiced writing my own poems; however, below is a selection of poems that I was able to dig up from my childhood and closer to the present.
1071 west C Ave
Mom and dad raised us on the bible
It sounds strict, but really all five of us could do whatever we wanted
as long as it didn’t violate God’s law
we have never had a lot of money
but my parents gave us the most envied childhood;
Swimming pool, horses, dirt bikes, baby animals and property to play on
Expectations kept us out of the worst trouble
But love and understanding let us get pretty close to it
And we still laugh about it today
Homeschooling sounds terrible to a lot of people
But I wouldn’t have traded it for the world
And I wouldn’t have learned to read and write from a patient mother, and a really cool brother and sister
If we weren’t riding horses, we were chasing them
If we weren’t doing school on the train to Chicago,
Then we were doing it in our homemade tree forts
Ski club, 4-H club, soccer club, basketball, and all the other ball clubs;
Music clubs, drama clubs, church clubs, choirs, equestrian clubs, boys clubs, and honors; now do that five times over
We were never bored,
But perhaps that's because if we admitted to being bored, then we had to do chores
So we just stayed outside instead
All the girls in our neighborhood avoided all the boys in the neighborhood
And while we were playing with every one of the American Girl dolls,
They were playing…well we don’t actually know because we avoided them
I do know the books of the bible, and dozens of verses,
But I also know every single Dixie Chicks song, every single Faith Hill song and
Quite a few from Brooks and Dunn as well
Mom and dad,
You did a really great job
And I am thankful
